ACGME Accreditation

The formal process by which the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education evaluates and recognizes residency and fellowship programs.

Designated Institutional Official (DIO)

The individual at a sponsoring institution who has the authority and responsibility for oversight of all ACGME-accredited programs.

Self-Study

Annual Program Evaluation (APE)

A required yearly review of a residency or fellowship program's performance, conducted by the Program Evaluation Committee.

Milestones

Clinical Competency Committee (CCC)

A required committee responsible for reviewing resident and fellow performance and making milestone determinations semiannually.

Program Evaluation Committee (PEC)

Duty Hours

Sponsoring Institution

A required agreement between a program and a participating site that defines the training experience, supervision, and educational responsibilities at that site.
