GME Faculty Development Curriculum Template

A full year of faculty development — planned, structured, and ready to run.

Most GME programs know they need a faculty development curriculum but don't know where to start. This template provides a complete 12-month framework built specifically for GME environments — not adapted from higher education or corporate training. It covers the core competencies that faculty need as clinical educators, aligns with ACGME requirements, and includes everything needed to document the program for surveyors.

What's included

  • 12-month curriculum calendar with session topics and sequencing
  • Eight session outlines — objectives, agenda, activities, and materials list
  • Facilitator guides for each session — can be run by program director or invited facilitator
  • Attendance tracking log — formatted for ACGME documentation
  • Pre/post session assessment tools — measure learning, not just satisfaction
  • Annual faculty development program evaluation framework
  • ACGME milestone alignment map — shows which sessions support which competency areas

Who this is for

  • Programs cited for inadequate faculty development
  • Program directors who need a turnkey solution they can implement immediately
  • GME offices standardizing faculty development across multiple programs

12-Month Session Sequence

The curriculum is organized into four quarters, each with a thematic focus.

Q1 (July-September) — Foundations of Clinical Teaching: Session 1: One-Minute Preceptor and Bedside Teaching. Session 2: Giving Effective Feedback — R2C2 Framework. | Q2 (October-December) — Assessment and Milestones: Session 3: Understanding and Rating Milestones. Session 4: CCC Preparation and Documentation. | Q3 (January-March) — Managing Challenges: Session 5: Identifying and Supporting the Struggling Resident. Session 6: Professionalism and Difficult Conversations. | Q4 (April-June) — Program and Faculty Leadership: Session 7: Faculty Well-Being and Sustainable Teaching. Session 8: Annual Curriculum Review and Planning.

Session Outline Sample — Giving Effective Feedback

Each session outline includes learning objectives, agenda, and facilitator notes.

Duration: 90 minutes | Learning objectives: (1) Apply the R2C2 feedback framework to a clinical scenario. (2) Identify barriers to effective feedback and strategies to address them. | Agenda: Pre-assessment survey (10 min). Didactic: What is feedback? (15 min). R2C2 framework walkthrough (20 min). Paired practice with standardized scenarios (30 min). Full group debrief (10 min). Commitments and post-assessment (5 min). | Materials: R2C2 reference card, two standardized scenarios, session evaluation form. | Facilitator notes: Pairs work best when faculty from different specialties are paired together — cross-specialty perspective reduces defensiveness.

How to use this template

  1. 1Review the full 12-month calendar and adjust session timing to fit your program's schedule
  2. 2Identify a consistent meeting time and protect it — faculty development works best when it's predictable
  3. 3Decide whether you or an invited facilitator will run each session — facilitator guides work for both
  4. 4Send pre-assessment surveys one week before each session via your program management system
  5. 5File attendance logs and session evaluations in your program records for ACGME documentation
